"X Marks The Spot"

a special exhibition of nine individuals

On October the 4th 2008, the members of the art collective Xstreets will put Amsterdam in a creative daylight. Amsterdam will be surprised when the streets are filled with unique works of art created by artists worldwide.

From 15:30, the international road show UmbrellART will take place, we'll walk through the centre of Amsterdam with forty hand designed umbrellas made by artists such as American graffiti king Zimad, street philosopher Laser 3.14, clothing designer Merel Boers, Italian artist Mr. Wany, Italian doll maker Maoma, cartoonist WZL and stencil artist IVES.one. Walk with us on this trip and bring the art back to the street where it is accessible by everyone. The road show begins at 15:30 on the Nieuwmarkt and ends at 18:00 in the CHIELLERIE on the Raamgracht 58.

At 18:30, the first edition of "X Marks The Spot" will be spectacularly opened by a inspiring fashion show by ILL_Design from Basel, Swizterland. The work shown in the gallery by the members of Xstreets Collective is not only original but also very contemporary. The gallery show has a unique sponsorship. European umbrella distributor Impliva will, with the support of a (professional) jury choose the artist with the most beautiful umbrella and award it with a one-of-a-kind production of his or her design.

The day ends with an official after party at the OT301 on the Overtoom. From 21:00 until 03:00 you can get your groove on with the musical support of Die Schallplattenpolizei, Dj 4Way, Dj Koldun (Funky Junkie), DRT MC, MC and MC SistaLin Pyro. Be tantalized by a special performance by the break dancers of Soulwarriors which will show off there old skool dance techniques.

The works of Xstreets Collective can be seen till the 9th of October, in the CHIELLERIE. Developments on the show can be seen here:

Marka27: Killa Instinct

Marka27's next dope vinyl figure, Killa Instinct, produced by Bic Plastics will be throwing down on both coasts with two release parties next month. Suru will drop Killa Instinct first in LA on Saturday, October 4th followed a week later by myplasticheartnyc in NYC on October 11th.

Marka and Bic Plastics have raised the bar with Killa Instinct. Transformed by toxic spray paint fumes, this mutated graff writer is ready for action with tools of the trade – a bad-ass removable gas mask, spray can, marker, bolt cutters, finger rings, and more.

Graff is part of Killa Instinct's being. So much so that he's got a spray can erupting out of his back. Don't you dare call him a hunch back though. The spray can which fuels his exploits directly through his gas mask also doubles as a secret stash with a removable top – for markers, an old school King or whatever else you want.

This original colorway of Killa Instinct stands roughly 8" tall, is limited to 300 pieces and will retail for $95. Check out great pics of the finished figure and packaging after the jump. We're pumped for this release, are you ?

GRILLED – A Dizzy Collage of Exhibition Street Art & Hip-Hop Art

Percolator Gallery -   134 Latrobe Tce, Paddington

map

Grilled will run at the Percolator Gallery for one exclusive week commencing with an Opening Reception on 25th September. The gallery will come alive with 1988 originators art, the music, the images and the stance that are stronger than ever. This exhibition will celebrate the work of these artists from Expo '88 with their new style in 2008.  Grilled will feature the works of 'old school' break-dancing brothers, Bill and James Moulton (who are the publishers of HYPE magazine - a globally distributed, colour lifestyle magazine based on Hip Hop subculture). In addition, Grilled will collectively present master pieces by Jason Heidke, Shannon Lawless, 'Mickey' Newman and Ron Hillier (MC CLINIC).

These artists are from Eagleby, the Southside district of Beenleigh, which has now become part of Logan City Council area. Growing up in this working-class suburb with countless blocks of public housing, they are only too aware of the injustices that the poorer people of Australia must face. This experience has influenced their conscious approach to both their Art and their politically-focused Music. They are the artists who have subverted public art spaces and originated the Highway murals colouring the sound-walls across south east Queensland. Everyone knows their work - from the Children's faces at Tugun, the Koalas at Daisy Hill to the funky Metro Jazz Musicians at the Juliette Street exit of the M1.

An exhibition of new paintings and drawings in oils, spray paint and charcoal on childhood, memory and self-sabotage.

Sonia Blair rose to notoriety in the UK and international graffiti art scene for both her spraycan artwork and her management skills with the establishment of her company Signal Project in 2002. Through Signal Sonia masterminded the production of over 100 coordinated graffiti murals and events, from large-scale multi-artist collaborations, to exhibitions and numerous community projects. Including the creation of the Kilburn Tube Mural, the largest permanent graffiti mural in Britain. Located beneath the arches on Kilburn High Road this particular mural remains unblemished four years on and was recently rated 10 out of 10 by Time Out magazine in an issue devoted to London’s murals; “A splendid attention to detail, with many subtle references to local themes… The best we’ve seen”.

Having spent the last 7 years organising and/or painting graffiti murals and events throughout London through her company Signal (www.signalproject.com), this will be Sonia's first solo London show.

Two Sides to Every Boxcar: An Exhibition and Discussion with buZ blurr

Babylon Falling
1017 Bush Street (@ Jones)
San Francisco, CA 94109
http://babylonfalling.com/
415-345-1017

buZ is driving up from his outpost in Arkansas (Surrealville, Principality of buZ) and heading to San Francisco for an exhibition of his artwork as well as an informal discussion.

The exhibition will be composed of a selection of photographs, cut stencils, collage work, and buZ’s famous artistamp portraits. buZ will lead a talk and Q&A about his introduction to and experiences with freight train boxcar art, the development of his style, his contribution to the mail art movement, the place of both boxcar art and mail art in the larger culture, and what he’s up to nowadays.

In addition to very small runs of homemade books we will also be selling a very limited (edition of 24) t-shirt designed by buZ blurr exclusively for Babylon Falling.

The opening reception will take place on Saturday, September 20th 2008 from 6-9pm. There will be drinks and music as always. The event is wheelchair accessible. The exhibition will run through October 19th.

A cult figure among contemporary freight train graffiti artists, Russell Butler aka Colossus of Roads aka buZ blurr considers himself, “a Life/Artist, documenting a non-art life with various media, primarily photography."

Working as a brakeman for the railroad, for thirty years buZ obsessively dispatched his distinctive moniker on the freight trains passing through the yards, quickly becoming one of the most prolific and well respected boxcar artists of all time.

Since discovering the mail art network in 1972 buZ has been a regular, active participant and has become famous for his meticulous artistamp portraits which document the various personalities he has encountered over the years at mail art conventions, hobo gatherings, and at his home in Gurdon Arkansas, where the most diligent of fans make the pilgrimage to pay their respects.

Though retired from the railroad buZ told Logan Hicks in 2004 that he is, “Still doing the boxcar icon dispatch, as well as spraying through stencils, and even gluing big collage composites onto the railcars; plus doing more correspondence and mail art, since I have retired. Currently enjoying embellishing large ink-jet phantasy collages with watercolors, paintstiks, charcoal, and Crayolas."

DUALITY OF HUMANITY

New Works by Shepard Fairey

Opening Reception - September 13th, 7-10pm

White Walls Gallery
835 Larkin Street
San Francisco, CA 9410
415.931.1500

Over 100 pieces will go on display at White Walls in a timely new show called “Duality in Humanity." The show marks a bit of a departure for the artist, whose unique form of reverse propaganda emerged from the spirit of the punk movement. With this show, Shepard takes a step back from the ‘calls to action’ against mindless consumerism and war evidenced in previous shows like 1984ia, E Pluribus Venom and Imperfect Union. “The difference between this show and the previous ones is that now Obama is in the mix," Shepard said. His recent work reflects his own personal shift towards a new optimism, a direct result of his involvement with, and inspiration by, the powerful political ideals of Barack Obama.

The title of the show, “Duality of Humanity," is inspired by the peace-sign wearing US soldier in Vietnam, ‘Joker,’ in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. A central piece is a child with a gun in his hand and a flower in his hat. That theme of soldiers and weapons bearing peace signs, or peace signs comprised of military effects, runs through many pieces in the show. Environmental themes also appear in some pieces, illustrating the tenuous balance between our dangerously uncontrolled consumption of non-renewable resources, and our well-intentioned eco-concerns. Suffering and hope are seamlessly merged in a visual mash-up that defies expectations and easy answers.

“Duality of Humanity" includes larger mixed media pieces on paper that has been covered with carefully collaged Ephemera, self-printed patterns and found clippings from printed media. The backgrounds provide a seductive painterly texture and visual subtext, often allowing apropos words and images to bleed through the iconic images printed over them. The multiple layers create a sense of depth, but also bring in temporal elements through preserved newsclippings, historic images and vintage printing effects. It is the images in the foreground, however, that give the work its power. They are crisp and provocative, communicating in a way that is direct and clear.

Two hip hop innovators present a unique visual and audio exhibition celebrating the history and positivity of the UK hip hop movement.

Foundation Rocks combines Lost and Found (Shucks One), a series of portraits, illustrations and sculpture, with Spats ‘85 (DJ Fingers), a rocking soundscape and images that make up a tribute to the founding artists of UK hip hop.

Foundation Rocks captures the original hip hop mantras of ‘peace, love, and unity; knowledge, wisdom and understanding’, presenting a challenge to the dominating themes of violence and vice which resonate throughout hip hop today. The project is the artists’ search to rediscover these foundation principles by retracing the history of UK hip hop music and the individuals making it. It is an attempt to cement the originators of UK hip hop as icons for British music fans, who are often more familiar with the originators in the US.

Lost and Found is a visual interpretation of interviews Shucks One conducted with hip hop pioneers of the 1980s, whose music influenced a whole generation of young men and women in the UK. The works address issues of history, identity and religion.

RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture

Since its inception in the 1970s, hip hop has been arguably the most influential and popular musical form in America. Its popularity extends beyond the urban centers of its inception and pervades youth culture throughout the world. Images of hip hop stars are as pervasive as the music itself, and the National Portrait Gallery is featuring the work of artists who have explored this phenomenon. David Scheinbaum has been photographing hip hop artists since 2000, both in concert and offstage, including such celebrated groups as Public Enemy, Blackalicious, Phar Cyde, De La Soul and Jurassic-5. Kehinde Wiley, best known for his large, colorful paintings of anonymous young black men, has created portraits of hip hop artists such as LL Cool J and Ice T, each based on a famous European or American painting from the 17th through 19th centuries. Nikki Giovanni wrote a poem that will be transcribed onto walls in the exhibition, and also interpreted artistically by artist Shinique Smith. Two Washington, D.C./Baltimore-based graffiti artists - CON and AREK - created four portrait murals to be installed in a hallway that connects the galleries. Jefferson Pinder created three video self-portraits that will be included in the installation. Curators for the exhibition are Frank A. Goodyear III, assistant curator of photographs and Brandon B. Fortune curator of paintings; Jobyl A. Boone, a Smithsonian predoctoral fellow is the guest curator.

Press preview Feb. 5, 9:30 a.m.

A booklet that accompanies the exhibition will be available in the museum's bookstore.

Sacred Spray Paint: Natural Pigments & Medicinal Markings

Mike 360 & Desi W.O.M.E.’s Report Back from the Painting, Planting and Pulling Weeds Tour

Underneath the glamorous excitement of midnight missions and rebellious subversion of the corporate visual pollution, the life of a “graffiti" writer has substantial long-term health implications from the repeated lasting exposure to the toxic chemicals present in commercially marketed aerosol spray paint. This past summer, two prolific writers took a hard road back to the traditional indigenous ways of paintmaking and lived to tell about it.

Many writers talk about the ancient ancestral connections between the writings in caves and temples and the modern subway writing movement but few actually have any experience with the traditional methods of paintmaking and spray painting. While the spray paint industry has exploded in the last 10 years, that entire movement has focused on writers’ insatiable appetite for a wide spectrum colors and specialized tools. Industry standards are beginning to regulate the VOC emissions of paint, but none have completely eliminated them. As a result, serious writers are exposed to huge amounts of toxins, which have caused major damage to their lungs, kidneys, liver, bladders and has even been fatal.

Mike 360 observed the effects of commercial aerosol paint on a butterfly in 1996, when one died trying to taste the flowers that he was painting on a wall. Since then, he has been searching for alternative formulas for paint, including his including the traditional medicine paints of his own people. Always consulting and obtaining permission from local indigenous elders, he linked with fellow Warriors Of Mother Earth (W.O.M.E.) Desi to study natural pigments and attempt to spray them through cans pressurized with compressed air. For the past two years, 360 and Desi have spent each summer traveling to different reservations including the Northern Cheyenne, Lakota, and Hopi, to listen to both the elders and the paint itself. Iron Oxide, one of the main sources of red, was the original component for data storage and the first cassettes.

In contrast to the instant gratification of commercial spray paint, traditional paintmaking is time consuming and difficult. 360 and Desi have utilized natural pigments in major murals including 360’s 6000 sq. ft. commission in his hometown of Albuquerque with other Zuni and Hopi natives. Still the process is in development. On Sept 5, 360 and Desi will host a report-back from their latest Painting, Planting and Pulling Weeds adventure in a exhibit of pigments, refillable spray cans, murals and photos at the Mama Buzz Café, featuring live music, poetry and surprise guest performances.

WORD IS BORN: Hip-Hop In The Movies, 1979-1984

Every Thursday night in September!

This series is all about when hip-hop was still a young'un, still in short (but totally fly) pants, learnin' its ABCs of beats, an organic pulsing unit from the South Bronx which pretty much changed everything. This hip-hop is about Puma Clydes, a square of linoleum on the cracked pavement, the rattle of a can of Krylon, and two Technics squeezed together on a card table - and it's all in the movies.

All nights in this series will feature live DJ sets, including appearances by Cut Chemist, Peanut Butter Wolf, J.Rocc and Arabian Prince.

Festival sponsors include Stones Throw, Turntable Lab, and Wax Poetics.

Programmed by Gabriele Caroti.
This series is dedicated to Tony Silver (1935-2008).

September 4th, 8:00pm - Wild Style/Bongo Barbershop

September 11th, 8:00pm - 80 Blocks From Tiffany's/The Deadly Art of Survival

"Among the multitude of writers (aerosol artists) from the 1970's & 80's, only a certain percentage understood the science of "breathing life into letters". These artists gave letters rhythm and a purpose. Not only were these legendary writers capable of producing highly stylized letters, they were also masters at adorning them with hypnotizing colors and unimaginable schemes and themes. True kings of their craft, they helped revolutionize the scene with a graphic lean! Their work assaulted the senses to the point where you can taste the colors, smell the composition and feel their artistic fury. Having them all in one exhibit is practically overwhelming and invokes high anxiety in any hardcore writer or supporter of the culture."

You've Been Wasting Your Time

Flip (Brazil), Hush (UK), Other (Canada)

1257 N. La Brea Ave. West Hollywood, CA 90038

Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is proud to present You've Been Wasting Your Time, a group show featuring Flip, Hush, and Other, three emerging young street artists from Brazil, the UK, and Canada, respectively. Employing expansive color palettes and innovative techniques, the trio collides to contribute an eclectic range of paintings, drawings, screen prints, works on wood, and mixed media collages inspired by their diverse cultural backgrounds. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 16th, 2008, from 8pm – Midnight. The exhibition will be open for viewing through Sunday, September 14th, 2008.

The depth and command of the artwork of Flip, Hush, and Other both challenges and seduces the viewer. Fascinated by the portrayal of the female form in art, Hush builds up and tears down layers of paint and images as he works, "letting the canvas and marks take their own path." His stylistic fusion of the East and West is enriched by his interpretation of the inherent power play in graffiti and street art. Flip, too, draws inspiration from Asia in his new body of work. Observing the relationship between human beings and nature, he plants a tranquility of communion beneath his passionate explosion of Japanese brushstrokes. A similar dichotomy prevails in the work of Other, who both provokes and calms in pieces that were composed within rattling train carriages and buzzing coffee shops. The ideas and characters he coaxes out of hiding "come from blotches of paint and wet drips on paper...sort of like ink blots in psychology."

About The Artists

FLIP - BRAZIL

Felipe "Flip" Yung is hailed by many as one of the most talented Brazilian artists of his generation, having painted and exhibited his work throughout the streets and galleries of Brazil, Europe, and the US for over a decade. Away from the wall and canvas, he has also lent his distinctive style to the world of designer plush and vinyl toys. HUSH - UK

The work of Hush has been described as a sensory assault of shape, color, and character. With his singular blend of anime, pop-infused imagery, graffiti, and graphic design, the Englishman who worked as a graphic designer and illustrator in Hong Kong for a number of years attacks contemporary culture and established societal norms with an overwhelming proficiency and superb dry wit. OTHER - CANADA

Even though the artist himself does not always accompany it, the artwork of Canadian painter Other travels by train through North America at all hours of the day. When not at work in his studio or exploring the world, the restless Other, who possesses "a nasty habit of scribbling on things that aren't mine", wanders into deserted train yards where he renders highly-skilled etchings of mournful men and beautiful creatures onto the sides of freight trains, then stands back as his canvas awakens and disappears into the darkness.

COLLECTION RIK REINKING

From the 14th of June until the 28th of September 2008 the audience at The Art Centre Silkeborg Bad will be able to gain an insight into a highly interesting period in modern art. The Art Centre Silkeborg Bad has succeeded in borrowing more that 60 works of art by internationally acclaimed artists from a large German private collection. The exhibition offers a great opportunity for getting some idea of pivotal aspects of contemporary art.

In the exhibition entitled Call it what you like! COLLECTION RIK REINKING, the audience will thus, in Silkeborg, be able to experience works of art which challenge the prevailing conception of art, from mid-June and three-four months onwards. The selection of works of art for the exhibition takes as its' starting point Conceptual Art of the 1960's and -70's, Minimalism and Pop Art. All of these categories are well represented in Rik Reinking's collection.

The collector, the 32 years old Rik Reinking, has for some time now collaborated closely with employees at The Art Centre Silkeborg Bad in making the exhibition a interesting platform for the audience's encounter with the forms of expression of contemporary art. There will be made good use of the exhibition areas.

Reinking's motive for building a significant international collection is his passionate interest in contemporary art and in communicating art.

The exhibitions includes works of art by Nir Alon, Carl Andre, Hermine Anthoine, Herbert Baglione, Miroslav Balka, Banksy, John Von Bergen, Rolf Bergmeier, Guillaume Bijl, John Bock, Victor Bonato, Boxi, Daniele Buetti, Werner Büttner, Baldur Burwitz, James Lee Byars, Andre Cadere, Lawrence Carroll, Max Cole, John Mccracken, Amie Dicke, Brad Downey, Jimmie Durham, Henrik Eiben, Johannes Esper, Robert Filliou, Urs Frei, Tom Früchtl, Hamish Fulton, Gregory Green, Nan Goldin, Rodney Graham, Till F.E.Haupt, Georg Herold, Jim Hodges, Mark Jenkins, Joe Jones, Izumi Kato, Wulf Kirschner, Jon Kessler, Imi Knoebel, Gary Kuehn, Toshiya Kobayashi, Barbara Kruger, Ange Leccia, Konrad Lueg, Daniel Man, Jonathan Meese, Björn Melhus, Jonathan Monk, Piotr Nathan, Bruce Nauman, Ernesto Neto, Cady Noland, Obey, Os Gemeos, Tony Oursler, Markus Paetz, Blinky Palermo, Stefan Panhans, Dan Peterman, Pius Portmann, Stephen Prina, Richard Prince, Robert Rauschenberg, Rudolf Reiber, Mirko Reisser (DAIM), Klaus Rinke, Rolf Rose, Ulrich Rückriem, Sam Samore, Michael Schmeichel, Till Schwieker, Santiago Sierra, Roman Signer, David Simpson, Rainer Splitt, Stohead, Thorsten Tenberken, Tilt, Rosemarie Trockel, Günter Tuzina, Dimitris Tzamouranis, Meyer Vaisman, Miss Van, Ben Vautier, Ludwig Vandefelde, Vitche, Johannes Wald, Lawrence Weiner, Pablo Wendel, Stefan Wewerka, Johannes Wohnsei

Mind-f-Art Art Exhibition

August 22, 2008 at 7pm to August 23, 2008 at 12am Location: Art.Les.NYC Studios Organized Located at 202 Rivington Street between Ridge and Pitt Streets By: Art Les NYC Studios art.les.nyc studios and GANJ1 are excited to announce "Mind-f-Art" - a collaborative show with artists SEN ONE and Dmitry Gubin on Friday, August 22rd at 7pm till midnight. The evening will examine the political strife concerning the current state of our country, and the title, "Mind-f-Art" calls on the condition of our political conscious. The show will feature new work by both artists, as well as a joint collaborative piece. SEN ONE's fascination for art started early on when he witnessed the rolling canvas otherwise known as the subway system of New York City. Growing up in both NYC and New Jersey he was presented with various styles and concepts, which he interpreted visually. Dmitry Gubin was born on October 6, 1975 in Kharkov, USSR (now Ukraine). His father, a Jewish dissident artist, was the first to introduce Dmitry to art and was responsible for Dmitry's initial art education. After receiving a refugee status Dmitry and his family have emigrated to the US in 1989. Gubin is inspired by the works of German Expressionists, Abstract Expressionists, graffiti writers, as well as urban decay. The evening will also feature live performances by singer/songwriter Dev Jana, and San Francisco based artist, GANJ1. As usual at art.les.nyc studios, The Tiki Bar located in the Jamaican Lounge will be full stocked with Grog-n-Scrod Sangria and a selection of beers and water for a humble suggested donation price. See more details and RSVP on Brooklyn Art Project

Color Me Bad

An interactive coloring book exhibition for a good cause/

Montréal’s Under Pressure international graffiti festival and Galerie d’art Yves Laroche - come together for a new interactive exhibition: Color Me Bad. Over the past 13 years, Under Pressure has invited over 30 artists to produce original artwork for the covers of their magazine and their annual event limited edition t-shirts. Now, these images will be transferred and stretched onto canvas stripped down to a basic outline: like a coloring book. Proceeds from the event will be going towards the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Color Me Bad invites artists and guests, including children and adults, to draw on the canvases using crayons. Being silently auctioned off throughout the evening, proceeds raised from the canvases and catalogues will be donated to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Also exhibiting will be a Wall of Fame portrait series of emerging and established graffiti artists by Danny Portieous, taken at last year’s Under Pressure festival.

INSIDERS, OUTSIDERS & THE MIDDLE

In conjunction with Giant Robot, Scion presents Insiders, Outsiders & The Middle at its 4,500 square foot Installation L.A. Gallery. At Giant Robot, the definition of art ranges from straight contemporary painting to sculpted figures (which were considered action figures just a few years ago). This exhibition celebrates not the disparate mediums, but the divergent mindsets of artists--as well as the gray areas.

Insiders are artists who work so hard in front of their computers that they don't leave their chairs long enough to hang their pieces on walls. More often, their art is found onscreen, in print, and on T-shirts. Adrian Johnson is an example from the U.K., with a retro drawing style inspired by children's books. The other Insiders are from Japan. Noriko Ashino runs the A Piece of Design firm, and specializes in a variety of disciplines including character design and graphics. Sometimes known as ZariganiWorks, the duo of Taro Mukasa and Yoshitane Sakamoto are responsible for the infamous Suicide Bomb Button, have created the Kore Janai Robo (which has gone from handmade wood figurines to vinyl characters with a TV show), and freelance design toys, characters, and products.

Outsiders include Space Invader, a street artist from Paris who makes his mark on walls around the world and calls each tiled piece an "invasion." He painstakingly documents each one before it gets ripped down—either by city workers or collectors—and publishes his work in books and maps. Kami is revered as a graffiti legend in Tokyo and has successfully transitioned from the streets to art galleries. His pieces often resemble flowing water.

And then there's The Middle. The original work of Kyoto-based Shinya Yamamoto has been found in many exhibitions as well as the drum set of Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley. Part Basquiat and part left-brain madness, his style is free flowing and dreamy. Nao Harada, proprietor of the Wrecks clothing line, sketches, draws, and paints with no regard to the meaning of art. He rides around on his BMX leaving stickers and tags around Tokyo. The lone American in the group, Ed Trask, is from Virginia. He tours constantly as the drummer for the veteran punk band Avail. Through painting, he recalls and reinterprets the slices of Americana that he sees on the road. Although there is no obvious correlation between the artists, they form a powerful cross-section of creative forces that are physically active with their art. They belie the image of the stationary artist and pose the question of how they will co-exist in a restrained gallery setting.

MISS VAN & VICTOR CASTILLO

CANTO NEGRO Y BRUJERIAS

A show presented at MERRY KARNOWSKY GALLERY

New Paintings, Drawings, Sculpture and Limited Edition Giclées by Miss Van and Victor Castillo

OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, 26 JULY, 19:00 – 22:00 H
EXHIBITION DATES: 26 JULY – 23 AUGUST 2008
GALLERY HOURS: TUESDAY – SATURDAY, 12:00 – 18:00

Merry Karnowsky Gallery Berlin is proud to present CANTO NEGRO Y BRUJERIAS, featuring the paintings of Barcelona-based artists Miss Van (France) and Victor Castillo (Chile). The two unfold their unique but harmonious iconographies in a pictorial exercise of intersecting ideas. These artists approach from their personal perspectives subjects like seduction, desire, enchantment, and the game of infantile cruelty. The title of the exhibition attempts to unite these proposals and at the same time, alludes to Spanish culture, superstition and witchcraft as basic context, and dark invocations of common ghosts.

The "poupees" of Miss Van, always surrounded in sensational atmospheres, embody the surrounding energies of the loving spell that they seduce and catch. All are portrayed in mystical scenarios, between meditation and liberation of evil, introspection and exorcism. Through their closed eyes, we enter into the private worlds of each, reflecting on their dark side and feminine fragility. Miss Van's work has shown in the United States, France, England, Austria, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and Australia.

Victor Castillo shows us a mixture of classic and comic painting loaded with infantile personages of subjects: macabre, joy, seduction and the unscrupulous pleasures of the destruction game. At the same time he also makes references to contemporary realities and a new generation's stimulations from the increasing bombardment by the media. Castillo's work has shown in Spain, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, the United States, Canada, Belgium and Taiwan.
